Audacity is a capable freeware multitrack audio recording and manipulation tool, available on a number of hardware platforms, ie: Windows, Mac, Linux, and BSD. It is what is typically known as a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), and is capable of most of the basic functions of commercial programs, apart from the ability to interface with MIDI.
