Audacity is a capable freeware multitrack audio recording and manipulation tool, available on a number of hardware platforms, ie: Windows, Mac, Linux, and BSD. It is what is typically known as a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), and is capable of most of the basic functions of commercial programs, apart from the ability to interface with MIDI.
Useful features of Audacity include:
- The ability to record whatever audio your computer is currently playing.
- Multitrack editing.
- Support for probably all desirable file types: .OGG, .MP3, .FLAC, .WAV …
